Ellijay is considered the Apple Capital of Georgia.  Ellijay is famous for its apple crops so plan to visit the local orchards and farmstands to buy fresh crisp Georgia grown apples or even better yet, try picking your own apples with your family for a complete apple experience as several orchards offer apple picking.


Georgia, being the Peach State, although the best peaches are grown in Georgia, you'll find some of the most delicious North Georgia grown apples.

Plan to attend the famous Annual Georgia Apple Festival of Ellijay where you can celebrate the North Georgia apple festivities with music, food, entertainment and over 300 vendors featuring art, crafts, foods, demonstrations. The Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay  is always held on the second and third "full" weekends in October at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairground South of Ellijay off Highway 5. The Georgia Apple Festival in Elijay is a lively family event that showcases fun activities connected with apples, sampling, picking, exhibits, food and art.
The Georgia Apple Festival of Ellijay is a perfect way to spend a fall weekend in a North Georgia Mountains setting.

Choose from a huge variety, including Granny Smith, Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Early McIntosh, McIntosh, Winter Banana, Red Delicious, Gold Rush, Mutzu, Swiss Gourmet, Pink Lady, Wine Sap, Arkansas Black, Yates, Jonagold, and many others.  Visit the Ellijay farmstands at the apple orchards for a selection of freshly picked apples but also fresh local produce, pies, fritters, breads, jams, ciders, cookies, juice and gifts.

At B.J. Reece Apple House, during the harvest season for apple picking, you can pick your own apples from their apple trees located directly behind their apple farm market.  The apple picking season usually begins the 3rd weekend in September until  the 3rd weekend in October or until all the apples have been harvested. Call for specific dates and for varieties available. The guided tours are offered everyday from 10:00am. to 5:30pm. every 30 minutes.

Hillcrest Orchards is a farm market with a lot of fun for the entire family including a petting farm, playground, wagon rides, farmhouse and Moonshine Museums, Pedal carts, Trikes, Apple Pickin' Festival last two weekends in September. Milk cows, watch cloggers and bands and enjoy great food at the festival.

The Mercier Orchard has been producing Georgia's top apples for over 60 years, and is still a family-run business. On fall weekends you can pick your own apples. After an afternoon of apple picking, eat at Mercier Orchards as they offer snacks and gourmet sandwiches. Try their apple cinnamon bread and fried apple hand pies. Panorama Orchards is a family-run fruit farm and was established in the 1920's to grow and sell apples. Penland's Apple House has two locations. They also provide an assortment of apple products, including jams and jellies, apple butter, fried apple pies, apple fritters, apple bread, apple cider and a wide variety of decorative items for the home. Tree ripened apples and peaches are available from early August to early December. By purchasing them directly at their farmstand since they are the grower, you are assured of getting better tasting, fresher, and less expensive apples and peaches.
