BRASSTOWN BALD
Brasstown Bald is the highest mountain in Georgia at 4784 feet above sea level. The temperature is usually 10 degrees cooler at the top of the mountain than in the parking lot below. Summer temperatures on the summit of Brasstown Bald have never been recorded above 84 degrees. There are exhibits and a small theater with a video presentation that shows the scenery seasons on Brasstown Bald. Enjoy a picnic at the picnic tables located at the parking lot. You can hike the .6 mile trail from the parking lot to the summit for a 360 degree view of 4 surrounding states. Additional trails on Brasstown Bald are available. On a very clear day, you can see Atlanta although most summer days will have a light haze. At the top of Brasstown Bald, there is a an observation deck. If you are unable to hike the steep .6 trail to the top of Brasstown Bald, you can take the shuttle for a nominal fee. A parking fee is charged. Brasstown Bald is open from Memorial Day through the end of October but may be open earlier or later depending on the weather conditions on the mountain.
From Ellijay to Brasstown Bald: Take Highway 515 east to the town of Hiawassee. After passing through Hiawassee take a right onto Highway 17. Follow the signs to Brasstown Bald. Call 706-896-2556 for additional information.
